Duyog Ramadhan ’84: Two Faiths, One Struggle
The Philippine government has had a long, contentious, and violent history with the Muslim minority of the Philippines, especially in the southern region of Mindanao. Duyog Ramadan refers to a solidarity iftar (meal taken at sundown) between Muslims and Christians that reflects a shared journey of struggle for self-determination. Beginning in the late 1970s in Muslim-Christian communities in Mindanao, Christian churches sponsored meals for the entire community in solidarity with Muslims breaking their fast at sundown during Ramadan. It continues to this day. In 1984, Duyog Ramadan called attention to shared struggles between Muslims and Christians.
