Commander Dante is Bernabe Buscayno. In 1969, Buscayno founded the New People’s Army (NPA), the military wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, led by Jose Maria Sison. The NPA, which boasted 20,000 members by the 1980s, directed guerilla warfare against the Marcos regime. Buscayno was captured by the Philippine government in 1976 and freed in March 1986.
