“A Song for Manong” is part three of the musical theater production Bamboo that Snaps Back, featuring the Asian American Art Ensemble and Kulintang Arts. It was premiered by Life on the Water at San Francisco’s Herbst Theater as a tribute to the struggles of Filipino immigrant laborers in the United States and featured kulintang music and dance with contemporary African American music. “A Song for Manong” was written by Marina Feleo Gonzalez, music and concept by Fred Ho(un), and choreographed by Alleluia Panis Ho(un) is a musical artist and political activist. He was the leader of the Afro Asian Music Ensemble and the Journey Beyond the West Orchestra. Ho founded the latter in 1982.
